We are Alleyne Dickens and Tierney Mays, mother and daughter who are 3rd and 4th generation Belgian Tervuren breeders. Alleyne became the principal breeder of Bonheur Belgian Tervuren in 1986, taking over from her mother Faye Dickens. Since this time, Alleyne has bred or co-bred more than 100 dogs with AKC titles, including 65 champions. She is an AKC Breeder of Merit Platinum. Tierney is a Breeder of Merit, and she’s just starting out. They have bred dogs which have titled in just about every AKC venue.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
If that’s the first question we get, we probably aren’t going to respond. It tells us that money might be more important than your next best friend. It also doesn’t give us enough information to answer properly. What type of puppy? Show? Companion? Performance? Many factors go into the price of a puppy, including but not limited to co-ownership, limited or full registration.
There’s a meme going around that says “What does a dog cost? Everything.” And it’s true. The purchase cost of the puppy is a small investment. Over the course of a dog’s life you’ll spend 10x that amount.
There’s also a saying, “You get what you pay for.”
Not a question but a big red flag. Not only no, but ABSOLUTELY NO. We do not believe in keeping two puppies the same or even close to the same age. We like to space out the puppies we keep two years apart. This works best on both ends of the dog’s life.
As a puppy, the individual attention that you give a puppy is very important. They bond to you, not to another puppy. Even if you just want a companion, having a puppy that looks to you for guidance and support is crucial. A puppy that looks first to its littermate or near age companion may not always be as obedient to your or even as social outside the home. Please look up littermate syndrome. It’s real and can be even more challenging when they decide they hate each other.
At the end of life, having two dogs the same age can be extremely difficult. Old age requires more veterinary care and dogs don’t get Medicare. It can be very expensive to treat multiple dogs with (name any geriatric condition). And in the end, losing one dog is hard enough. Losing two within a short period of time can be devastating.
We health test all of the females we breed and only breed to similarly health tested males. At minimum we do OFA certifications for hips, elbows, thyroid, and eyes.
When litters are born here, the puppies are whelped in Alleyne’s roll-in shower. They stay with her and their mother there for several weeks. Their nervous systems are stimulated every day with ENS. Once they’re eating gruel, they move out to the kitchen where they are exposed to lots of noises, other dogs and people. They start to go outside onto the deck at about 4 weeks – always supervised.
No. But that’s because we don’t keep males. We strongly believe in keeping our bloodlines as diverse as possible, so we usually breed to males owned by others. That means we must pay a stud fee or return a puppy. We will provide as much information about the sire as we can, and provide their contact information for you.
We don’t take deposits until after the puppies are born and we have reasonable expectations that we’ll have a puppy for you. Your position on the waitlist is dependent on factors other than money.
All Terv puppies are cute! But looks aren’t everything. Placing the right puppy with the right family is a job that takes years to master. While we ALWAYS take dogs back without question, we never want to have to. So please trust us to pick the right puppy for you.
